Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has expressed a desire to feature in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. However, former international David Warner has cast doubt on Maxwell’s eligibility, citing his lack of recent experience in red-ball cricket as a significant barrier.

Warner Questions Maxwell’s Test Credentials
Maxwell’s inclusion in the Test squad has become a topic of debate, especially since he has played only a single Sheffield Shield match this year and has limited red-ball exposure. Warner believes Maxwell’s absence from regular first-class cricket should disqualify him from being considered for a Test recall.
“If you’re not being picked for your Shield team, then why do you deserve it? You’ve got to actually want it, to want to play four-day cricket,” Warner said in an interview with Code Sport.
Warner emphasized that earning a Test spot requires consistent performances in the longer format and not merely expressing interest.
“You’ve got to grind it out and do the hard work. I just don’t think you can keep putting your hand up to say, ‘I want to play just that.’ You’ve got to prove your commitment and readiness by playing the right games,” Warner added.
Maxwell’s Test Career: A Brief Overview
Maxwell has had a modest Test career, featuring in just seven matches, scoring 339 runs at an average of 26.07. His last Test appearance was in 2017 against Bangladesh. While his talent is unquestionable in the shorter formats, critics like Warner believe he needs to prove his readiness through consistent domestic performances.
Adam Zampa Also in the Mix
Maxwell isn’t the only player expressing interest in the Sri Lanka Test series. Star spinner Adam Zampa has also declared his availability, aiming to make his Test debut.
Upcoming Commitments
Both Maxwell and Warner will return to action in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL), scheduled to begin on December 31. For Maxwell, the path to a Test recall might remain challenging unless he prioritizes and excels in red-ball cricket.
