India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is facing mounting criticism following India’s dismal 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Australia. The poor performances have led to comparisons between Gambhir and former coach Greg Chappell, who was often blamed for a difficult phase in Indian cricket marked by controversies and turmoil.
However, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has firmly dismissed these parallels, asserting that Gambhir’s approach is far different from Chappell’s infamous tenure.

Direct Approach Sets Gambhir Apart
Speaking to Lallantop, Uthappa highlighted Gambhir’s straightforward nature as a key distinction.
“I don’t agree with the comparison to Greg Chappell. I have never met someone as direct as Gautam Gambhir. He will always tell you what he thinks to your face. You may not always like it, but you can respect his honesty,” Uthappa stated.
Unlike Chappell, whose strained relationship with then-captain Sourav Ganguly created significant friction, Gambhir reportedly maintains a respectful relationship with current skipper Rohit Sharma.
Chemistry Between Gambhir and Rohit
Uthappa acknowledged that Gambhir and Rohit may still be finding the right chemistry but assured that mutual respect exists between the two.
“Some combinations take time to click. It’s not that they lack chemistry, but both are strong leaders with unique styles. Gambhir respects Rohit and his leadership,” Uthappa added.
Gambhir’s Coaching Role Under Scrutiny
Despite leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to success in the IPL 2024 as a mentor, Gambhir’s role as India’s head coach is under pressure. Criticism mounted after India’s poor Test series showing and Rohit Sharma’s extended slump, where he managed just 31 runs in three Tests at an average of 6.20.
Gambhir faced additional backlash for his decision to drop Rohit from the final Test in Sydney. While the move drew accusations of disrespect, Uthappa defended Gambhir’s decision-making process as being purely team-focused.
High Stakes Ahead: Champions Trophy 2025
Both Gambhir and Rohit face immense pressure to deliver positive results in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where India will play all its matches in Dubai. The tournament offers both a chance at redemption after recent setbacks.
With Indian cricket at a crossroads, the Gambhir-Rohit dynamic will be critical as the team aims to regain its winning momentum and restore faith in their leadership.
