The Sri Lankan cricket fraternity is in shock following the tragic death of former U-19 World Cup captain Dhammika Niroshana. The 41-year-old was reportedly shot dead outside his residence in Ambalangoda, Galle on July 16th.
Niroshana, a promising fast bowler with a handy lower-order batting ability, showed immense potential during his early years. Local media reports suggest his wife and children were present during the attack. The motive behind the crime remains shrouded in mystery, and authorities are searching for the unidentified assailant.
While Niroshana never quite reached the dizzying heights of senior international cricket, his contribution to Sri Lankan cricket shouldn’t be overlooked. He captained the U-19 team in 10 matches between 2000 and 2002, leading future stars like Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, and Farveez Maharoof. These players, who would later become household names in international cricket, honed their skills under Niroshana’s leadership.
Niroshana’s own cricketing career spanned from 2001 to 2004, where he represented Galle Cricket Club in first-class and List A matches. He compiled over 300 runs and picked up 19 wickets during his short but promising career.
This tragedy casts a shadow over Sri Lankan cricket as they prepare to host India for a white-ball series starting later this month. The three T20Is and three ODIs will mark a new chapter for Indian cricket under head coach Gautam Gambhir and without veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.
