England’s rising batting star, Harry Brook, has pulled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season at the eleventh hour, putting himself at risk of facing a two-year ban from the tournament.
Brook, who was signed by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 6.25 crore in the 2024 auction, cited his commitment to England cricket and the need for rest as the primary reasons for his withdrawal.

Harry Brook Apologizes, Prioritizes England Over IPL
Taking to social media, Brook expressed his regret over the decision, apologizing to Delhi Capitals and their fans while reaffirming his focus on international cricket.
“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologize unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series.”
The 25-year-old also mentioned that he needs time to recharge after a hectic schedule.
“In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right. Playing for my country remains my priority and focus.”
Brook Faces Potential Two-Year IPL Ban
Brook’s decision to withdraw at the last minute could see him barred from participating in the IPL for the next two seasons (2026 and 2027).
Ahead of the 2025 mega auction, the IPL governing council introduced a new rule banning overseas players who pull out after being picked at the auction—unless they have a verified injury or medical condition confirmed by their home board.
A note issued to franchises last September stated:
“Any overseas player who registers for the auction and, after getting picked, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons.”
This rule was introduced following frustration from IPL franchises over the frequent last-minute withdrawals of several overseas players, particularly English cricketers in recent years.
Delhi Capitals Yet to Announce Replacement
With Brook now unavailable, Delhi Capitals will have to look for a replacement ahead of IPL 2025. His absence is a blow to the team, given that he was touted as a potential game-changer in the middle order.
Brook previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2023, where he had a mixed campaign, scoring 190 runs in 11 matches at an average of 22.11. However, he did manage to register a memorable century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
This marks the second consecutive year Brook has opted out of the IPL. In 2024, he withdrew after his grandmother’s passing, choosing to spend time with his family.
With Delhi Capitals yet to make an official announcement on his replacement, it remains to be seen how the franchise will fill the void left by the English batter. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on whether the IPL enforces the two-year ban on Brook for his last-minute decision.
