ENG vs IND 2025: Rohit Sharma Likely to Skip England Tour; Virat Kohli Set for Test Return – Report

In a major development ahead of India’s five-match Test series against England, reports suggest that Rohit Sharma is likely to opt out, while Virat Kohli is set to be included in the squad.

The much-anticipated series, which starts on June 20 at Headingley, marks India’s next big challenge in red-ball cricket as they aim to win their first Test series in England since 2007.

Rohit Sharma’s Future in Tests Uncertain

Rohit Sharma’s position in India’s Test setup has been under scrutiny following a poor run of form. Between September 2024 and January 2025, the Indian skipper managed just 164 runs in 10 Tests, including a forgettable Australia tour, where he averaged just 6.2 runs per innings, the lowest for a touring Indian captain in Australia.

Speculation about his retirement grew when he withdrew from the final Sydney Test, but Rohit later clarified that he has no immediate plans to step away from Test cricket. However, as per a report by India Today, the 37-year-old has decided to sit out the England tour after his struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Virat Kohli Set to Retain His Spot

Unlike Rohit, Virat Kohli is set to continue in India’s Test squad. Kohli showed glimpses of form with a century in the Perth Test, though he struggled for consistency. Both Rohit and Kohli made Ranji Trophy comebacks but failed to deliver big scores.

England vs India 2025: Test Series Schedule

  • 1st Test: June 20-24 – Headingley, Leeds
  • 2nd Test: June 28 – July 2 – Edgbaston, Birmingham
  • 3rd Test: July 6-10 – Lord’s, London
  • 4th Test: July 18-22 – Old Trafford, Manchester
  • 5th Test: July 26-30 – Kennington Oval, London

With India’s Test leadership and squad balance now in question, the upcoming months will be crucial in shaping their red-ball future. Will Rohit return after a break, or is this the start of a transition phase in Indian Test cricket?
