Former Indian captain and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has stirred the pot by pointing out that Shreyas Iyer didn’t receive due credit for leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their IPL 2024 title. While the win ended a 10-year title drought for KKR, the majority of the praise went to then-mentor Gautam Gambhir, sidelining the significant role played by captain Shreyas Iyer on the field.
Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports, said, “He did not get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It is the captain who plays a major role in what is happening in the middle, not someone sitting in the dugout.”
The statement, while not directly accusing Gambhir of being a “credit stealer,” raises questions about the narrative around team successes in the IPL and how off-field roles like mentors or coaches often overshadow the tactical and leadership contributions of captains.
Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL titles as a player and returned as a mentor in 2024, is now the head coach of the Indian men’s national team. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, currently captaining Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025, is finally getting recognition for his leadership. Under Iyer, PBKS have stormed into the playoffs for the first time since 2014, losing only 3 of their 12 matches so far.
Gavaskar noted the difference this season, saying, “See, this year he’s getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to (PBKS coach) Ricky Ponting.” It was a subtle yet strong remark emphasizing that while support staff play an important role, the captain’s on-field decisions and composure ultimately shape the outcome.
Iyer’s personal performance also backs up his leadership credentials. He has amassed 435 runs in 12 innings at a superb average of 48.33 and a blistering strike rate of 174.70. His consistency and tactical acumen have been instrumental in PBKS’s success.
As Punjab Kings eye a maiden title, the ongoing recognition for Iyer could reshape how captains are credited in the IPL — not just as players, but as true leaders steering their teams under pressure.
