Australian T20 legend Dan Christian, 41, has stepped out of retirement to bolster the injury-hit Sydney Thunder in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL). Christian, who last played professionally for the Sydney Sixers two seasons ago, had been serving as an assistant coach for the Thunder.
Despite hanging up his boots after the BBL12 semi-final loss to the Brisbane Heat, Christian has stayed match-fit by playing in the NSW Premier Cricket competition with UNSW.

Joining the Elite 40+ Club in the BBL
Christian’s return places him in the elite group of players to feature in the BBL past 40, including legends like Brad Hodge, Peter Siddle, Fawad Ahmed, and Shane Warne, the league’s oldest player at 43.
Injury Woes for Sydney Thunder
The Thunder’s decision to bring Christian back was prompted by an unfortunate series of injuries:
- Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft suffered a collision in the field, leaving Sams with a concussion and Bancroft with a fractured shoulder blade, broken nose, and concussion.
- Key players Jason Sangha, Nic Maddinson, and Tanveer Sangha are also sidelined.
Additionally, Thunder may lose Sam Konstas to Test duties and will bid farewell to internationals Sherfane Rutherford and Lockie Ferguson, who are set to join the ILT20 later in the season.
Dan Christian’s Statement
Christian expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating:
“I made the decision during the off-season that a return to the BBL or any other T20 leagues was never entirely off the table for me. The body feels great, and I wanted to ensure I was prepared if an opportunity arose.
“The incident with Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams was extremely unfortunate, but I’m really grateful for the opportunity it’s presented. I wish them all the best with their recoveries and hope they’ll be back on the park soon.”
Thunder’s Confidence in Christian
Thunder general manager Trent Copeland hailed Christian’s experience, saying:
“We’re very fortunate to have Dan already within the club. He’s a legend of the BBL, and we’ve got no doubt he’s still up to the level. We can’t wait to see him jump back into this environment and make an impact.”

Thunder’s Campaign So Far
Despite an injury-marred season, the Sydney Thunder have shown significant improvement after finishing as wooden spooners last year. Christian’s return adds depth and experience as they aim to maintain their upward trajectory.
Fans and teammates alike are eager to see the veteran all-rounder bring his trademark versatility and leadership to the Thunder’s lineup for the remainder of the tournament.
