Mumbai, October 25, 2023 – Cricket enthusiasts and fans of the iconic Sachin Tendulkar are in for a treat as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced that a life-size statue of the legendary cricketer will be unveiled at Wankhede Stadium. This auspicious event is scheduled to take place on November 2, ahead of India’s World Cup 2023 fixture against Sri Lanka.
The statue, crafted by a renowned artist from Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district, aims to honor the incredible contributions of Sachin Tendulkar to the world of cricket. It will be situated near the Sachin Tendulkar stand within the stadium.
Amol Kale, the President of the MCA, expressed his delight at being able to pay tribute to the cricketing maestro on such an esteemed occasion. “Tendulkar is a Bharat Ratna, and everyone knows what he has contributed to cricket. As he turns 50, it will be a small token of appreciation from the Mumbai Cricket Association. I spoke to him three weeks ago and received his consent on the matter,” said Kale, as quoted by The Indian Express in February.
Sachin Tendulkar, whose illustrious career spanned 24 years, played 200 Tests and 463 ODIs for India, accumulating an unparalleled number of runs (15,921 in Tests and 18,426 in ODIs) and centuries (51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs). He is celebrated worldwide as one of the greatest cricketers to have ever graced the sport.
In another exciting development, Wankhede Stadium will offer a unique treat to fans attending the World Cup matches. The proposal, initiated by Amol Kale, will grant spectators a free serving of popcorn and cold drinks. The complimentary refreshments will be available to non-hospitality areas. Fans need only have their tickets stamped to enjoy this special treat, generously funded by the MCA. This delightful offering will begin from the India vs. Sri Lanka game and extend through to the semi-finals.
Wankhede Stadium has already hosted several World Cup 2023 matches, and with the impending India-Sri Lanka clash on November 2, and Australia facing Afghanistan at the venue on November 7, cricket aficionados are in for a thrilling experience. The second semi-final of the prestigious tournament will also grace the Wankhede Stadium on November 16, providing fans with a truly unforgettable cricketing spectacle.
