CSK Coach Michael Hussey Emphasizes Youth Development Amid Disappointing IPL 2025 Campaign

The 2025 IPL season has been far from ideal for the Chennai Super Kings. With just two wins in nine matches, the five-time champions languish at the bottom of the points table and are staring at an early exit from the playoff race. Much of CSK’s troubles have stemmed from a faltering top order, with batters like Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Rahul Tripathi failing to deliver consistent performances.

In response to the persistent struggles, the CSK management has introduced youngsters Ayush Mhatre and Shaik Rasheed into the top order in hopes of reinvigorating their batting unit. However, the team’s challenges have underscored a deeper concern within the franchise—talent identification and development.

Speaking ahead of CSK’s upcoming clash against Punjab Kings on April 30, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey opened up about the franchise’s focus on strengthening its youth pipeline.

“I think it’s one area that we’ve really identified that we want to improve on — the talent identification side of things,” Hussey said.

Hussey explained that the franchise has taken proactive steps to scout players beyond the auction table, offering trials and training opportunities throughout the year.

“We have had different players come in and train with us at various stages, almost on trial a little bit, but also when their names come up for an auction, then at least we’ve seen them, we’ve had eyes on them.”

He emphasized the value of watching players live, in pressure situations, rather than solely relying on highlight reels and video packages.

“If we can play some practice games, see them [youngsters] under pressure, we can make more informed decisions about the talent that we’re looking at moving forward.”

Even as playoff hopes dwindle, CSK remains committed to player development. Hussey confirmed that nurturing young talent remains a year-round process, extending beyond the two-month IPL window.

“We’ll keep a close eye on them when they’re playing domestic stuff as well and keep working with them… seeing how they’re going, particularly in those pressure situations, seeing what their mentality is like.”

One such prospect is Shaik Rasheed, who has already shown promise during his recent stint in the team.

“Shaik Rasheed’s a good example. We’ve had him with us for a couple of seasons. He’s a beautiful player, and now he’s getting his opportunity. Obviously, he’ll want to get more runs before the end of the season, but he certainly has the skill and talent.”

Hussey also highlighted the significance of the Super Kings Academy—CSK’s high-performance center in Chennai—as a key driver of their developmental ambitions.

“It’s a fantastic resource for us. And to be able to put players into situations in practice games that are closer to the match… it’s better than just batting in the nets.”

With CSK’s 2025 campaign on the brink, their renewed focus on youth development signals a shift in long-term planning. As the franchise seeks to rebuild and return stronger in future seasons, investing in emerging talent remains a priority—even if it comes at the cost of immediate results.
