In a dramatic turn of events, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the IPG Group have officially terminated the franchise agreements of Colombo Strikers and Jaffna Kings, two prominent teams set to participate in the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2025. This development marks a significant shake-up in the Sri Lankan T20 league’s ecosystem.

Why Were the Teams Terminated?
According to an official statement, both franchises were unable to fulfil their contractual obligations as stipulated in their agreements with the IPG Group, the official event rights holder for the LPL. These agreements were signed at the inception of the teams’ entry into the league.
As a result, neither Colombo Strikers nor Jaffna Kings will participate in the upcoming 2025 edition of the LPL. The IPG Group is now expected to transfer or assign new ownership for teams based in Colombo and Jaffna to prospective investors.
Impact on the League
The termination of these franchises, especially Jaffna Kings, is a massive loss for the tournament. The Jaffna-based franchise is the most successful team in LPL history, having won four out of the five titles since the league’s inception.
Most recently, they were crowned champions in LPL 2024 under the leadership of Charith Asalanka, and were poised to enter the 2025 season as defending champions. Their sudden exit leaves a competitive and emotional void in the tournament.
