Ben Stokes Reveals Lifestyle Change During Injury Rehab: Quits Alcohol to Fast-Track Recovery

England Test captain Ben Stokes has made a bold lifestyle change to aid his recovery from a recurring hamstring injury — he has given up alcohol as part of his rehabilitation plan. The all-rounder, who tore his left hamstring during England’s tour of New Zealand, underwent surgery in December 2024 and has been out of action since.

In a candid conversation on the Untapped podcast, the 33-year-old revealed that his decision to quit alcohol was rooted in self-discipline and accountability, aimed at ensuring full fitness ahead of England’s upcoming Test series against India and The Ashes in Australia.

“I’ve not had a drink since January 2,” said Stokes. “I said to myself: ‘Not until I finish my injury rehab and get back on the field.’ I don’t think I’ll ever be completely sober, but this change was necessary.”

Stokes reflected on his injury experiences, admitting he questioned if lifestyle choices, including alcohol consumption, might have indirectly contributed to his physical setbacks.

“We did have a bit of a drink four or five nights ago, could that have played a part? It wouldn’t have helped,” he said. “That was when I realised I needed to start changing what I do.”

Stokes had previously torn the same hamstring during The Hundred last season and re-aggravated it during the New Zealand tour. After months of rehabilitation and a personal commitment to recovery, he is now set for a comeback in England’s one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge on May 22.

Interestingly, Stokes also signed a partnership with CleanCo, a company specializing in zero-alcohol spirits, which aligns with his current personal ethos.

The decision to go alcohol-free has been lauded by fans and experts alike, showcasing Stokes’ maturity and fierce determination to remain at the top of his game, both physically and mentally. His return will be crucial as England gear up for two massive Test campaigns in the coming months.
