Delhi Arun Jaitley Pollution

BCCI Likely To Shift India vs South Africa Test Match To Kolkata Due To Delhi Pollution

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a venue change for the upcoming India vs South Africa Test series due to concerns over air pollution in Delhi. According to a report by The Times of India, the first Test, originally scheduled to take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi from November 14 to 18, will now likely be moved to Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

This decision has been prompted by the alarming levels of air pollution that plague Delhi every year during the Diwali season. November, in particular, sees a significant spike in pollution levels due to the widespread use of firecrackers, agricultural stubble burning in neighbouring states, and deteriorating weather conditions that trap pollutants in the air.

BCCI’s Priority: Player Health Over Tradition

A BCCI official told TOI, “The match between India and South Africa from November 14 to 18 will now be played in Kolkata instead of Delhi, due to potentially high pollution levels. The BCCI prioritises the well-being of the players and their health, and a formal announcement regarding the venue swap will be made soon.”

The decision to shift the venue underscores the BCCI’s growing awareness of environmental and health concerns. In the past, the cricket board has come under criticism for conducting matches in Delhi during peak pollution periods. The 2017 Test between India and Sri Lanka in Delhi is a notable example, where several Sri Lankan players wore pollution masks and complained of breathlessness, causing repeated interruptions.

Kolkata to Host South Africa Test; Delhi Gets WI Fixture

To maintain balance and fairness in venue distribution across the Indian cricketing calendar, the BCCI has made another strategic adjustment. The second Test of the India vs West Indies series, previously slated to be held in Kolkata from October 10 to 14, will now be hosted in Delhi instead. This move ensures that both Delhi and Kolkata retain a share of high-profile matches during the international season.

A Sensible Step Amid Environmental Concerns

Medical experts have long warned against conducting strenuous outdoor activities in Delhi during November, citing potential long-term respiratory and cardiovascular risks. With elite athletes involved, the BCCI’s decision to move the match appears both practical and responsible.

As India gears up for a packed home season featuring marquee clashes, this venue switch marks a thoughtful step towards balancing cricketing tradition with environmental responsibility. A formal announcement from the BCCI is expected shortly.
