The Indian cricket team has been dealt a significant blow ahead of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, with Shubman Gill sustaining a finger injury during an intra-squad match against India A. To address this setback and mounting injury concerns, the BCCI is weighing the option of retaining either Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal as backup players for the opening Test.

Injury Woes Deepen for Team India
Gill’s injury isn’t the only concern for India. KL Rahul also suffered an injury during the same intra-squad match, further complicating the team’s situation. Adding to the challenges, skipper Rohit Sharma is unlikely to feature in the first Test as he awaits the birth of his second child.
With India’s batting lineup under strain, the BCCI has reportedly turned to Sudharsan and Padikkal, both of whom have been in Australia representing India A in matches against Australia A. According to The Times of India, one of the two left-handers could be asked to stay back in Australia as part of the senior team setup.

Promising Performances Down Under
Sudharsan and Padikkal have impressed during their stint with India A, delivering consistent performances with the bat in the recently concluded series against Australia A. Their adaptability to Australian conditions and ability to anchor innings make them strong candidates to fill the void in the senior squad.
Currently, both players are engaged in match simulations in Perth, while the rest of the India A squad is scheduled to leave for home on November 17. The BCCI’s final decision on which player will join the senior team could hinge on Gill’s medical report and the team management’s assessment of their immediate needs.

Selection Dilemma for BCCI

A Crucial Start to the Series
The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to begin shortly, is critical for India as they look to start strong against a formidable Australian side. With injury clouds looming over key players, the inclusion of a fresh and confident batter like Sudharsan or Padikkal could be pivotal.
The BCCI is expected to make a decision soon, ensuring that the Indian squad is well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
