‘Ate And Left’: Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh Reveal Shikhar Dhawan Came Empty-Handed to Their Weddings

Former India teammates Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma recently shared a hilarious anecdote involving Shikhar Dhawan on Harbhajan’s YouTube show Who’s The Boss?, co-hosted by his wife Geeta Basra. The duo humorously revealed that Dhawan attended both of their weddings, enjoyed the celebrations to the fullest — but didn’t bring any gifts!
Harbhajan Singh tied the knot with Geeta Basra in a traditional ceremony in Jalandhar on October 29, 2015. Rohit Sharma and Ritika Sajdeh got married later that year, on December 13, in Mumbai. Dhawan, being a prominent part of the Indian team and especially close to Rohit, attended both events.
“Shikhar Dhawan came to our wedding,” Harbhajan recalled. “He danced a lot, ate, drank, had an absolute blast. And while leaving, he slipped an envelope into my pocket. I thought it was a sweet gesture. But when I opened it later — forget 101 rupees, there wasn’t even one rupee inside. It was totally empty!”
In Indian weddings, envelopes or ‘shagun’ usually contain a symbolic cash amount and blessings. Harbhajan’s playful jab was followed by a question to Rohit: “Did he give you anything?”
Rohit laughed and responded, “Nothing. He just danced, ate, drank and left.”
The room burst into laughter as the memory unfolded, showcasing the fun camaraderie shared by the Indian cricket stars. Despite the jokes, Rohit was quick to praise Dhawan, calling him a class act and recalling their long-standing friendship that dates back to junior cricket days.
“What a guy he is, total class! From childhood, we’ve played together. We did a tour to Australia for India A before even making it to the national side,” said Rohit.
The duo formed one of the most formidable opening pairs in ODI cricket, scoring 5,148 runs in 115 innings — the fourth-highest opening partnership in ODI history.
Dhawan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in August 2023, after an illustrious career. Rohit has also retired from T20Is and Test cricket but continues to lead India in ODIs, hoping to be fit and available for the 2027 World Cup.
This light-hearted banter between former teammates gives fans a peek into the close-knit friendships and fun behind the scenes — proving that the spirit of Indian cricket goes beyond the boundary line.
