Shikhar Dhawan - Rohit Sharma

As a leader, Rohit has become mature; he knows when to be lenient and when to pull back: Shikhar Dhawan

Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan recently reflected on his 2013 ICC Champions Trophy journey, reminiscing about his historic opening partnership with Rohit Sharma and the evolution of Rohit as a leader.

Speaking on The Shikhar Dhawan Experience on Star Sports and JioHotstar, Dhawan recalled how his opening stint with Rohit began in the 2013 Champions Trophy, a decision made by then-captain MS Dhoni.

The Birth of a Legendary Opening Pair

Dhawan revealed that the decision to open with Rohit Sharma was made just half a day before India’s first match in the tournament. What followed was an era-defining partnership that flourished for a decade.

“This opening pair decision was made half a day prior to that match. At that time, I was also new, and I was in my own world. I had made a comeback and needed to perform well. But MS Dhoni took this decision and instructed Rohit to open.”

The duo hit the ground running, putting up a 100-run stand in their very first match together. Their chemistry and consistency made them one of India’s most successful white-ball opening pairs.

“We didn’t think much about it, but it turned into something massive. We played together for 10 years, and it was a wonderful journey.”

Strong Bond On and Off the Field

Reflecting on his friendship and understanding with Rohit Sharma, Dhawan emphasized the deep trust and camaraderie that helped them succeed.

“We trust each other, and our understanding and level of communication was very high. On the field and off the field, our bond is the same. We played together, we partied together after winning so many series. Even before playing for India, when Rohit was 16-17 years old, we played together in the Under-19 World Cup.”

Rohit Sharma’s Growth as a Leader

Having played under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, Dhawan also lauded his maturity as a captain, particularly in handling pressure and managing the team.

“From 2013 to 2025, 12 years of experience is a lot. Rohit has been through a lot. He knows how to work in a pressure situation, how to gather the boys. As a leader, he has become mature, he knows when to be lenient and when to pull back.”

He highlighted Rohit’s ability to strike the right balance between authority and camaraderie, making him an effective leader.

“It’s a fine balance, and Rohit’s bond with the boys is amazing. We are in a great situation.”

A Partnership to Remember

Dhawan and Rohit’s opening partnership was instrumental in India’s success across formats for nearly a decade. While Dhawan has moved out of India’s plans in recent years, his praise for Rohit Sharma’s leadership and their historic partnership serves as a testament to their lasting impact on Indian cricket.
