Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has lauded senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah for being his biggest influence in mastering the art of yorkers — a skill that has turned him into one of India’s most dependable death bowlers in recent years.

During his appearance on the popular show Breakfast with Champions, Arshdeep opened up about the learning process behind his remarkable consistency in bowling yorkers, comparing Bumrah’s precision to that of a “vending machine” that delivers exactly what one asks for.

“So, the vending machine or whatever the highest level is, it goes to Jassie (Jasprit Bumrah) Bhai. That goes to him,” Arshdeep said with a smile.

“After that, yes, if you press the yorker button in such a vending machine and the ball lands somewhere close—if the batter gets out or if it doesn’t go for a six—then yes, you can put me in that category. So, all the credit goes to Jassie Bhai for the way I bowl.”

The 25-year-old pacer was instrumental in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, particularly in the high-pressure final against South Africa, where his disciplined bowling at the death helped India clinch the title.

While Bumrah walked away with the Player of the Tournament award, Arshdeep’s ability to complement him with accurate death bowling was widely praised by fans and experts alike.

Arshdeep’s Learning Curve and Inspirations

In the same conversation, Arshdeep revealed how his obsession with mastering yorkers led him to watch hours of footage featuring some of the greatest left-arm fast bowlers in cricket history.

“All left-arm pacers’ videos that are on YouTube — I don’t think I’ve missed any yet,” he said.

“If I used to watch yorkers, I really liked Wasim Akram’s compilation videos. Saare videos mein bas dande uda rahe (In all the videos, he was only hitting the stumps). A left-arm seamer bowling those in-swingers and reverse swings to right-handed batters — I used to enjoy it a lot… what a skill he had.”

Arshdeep further added that apart from Akram, he also studied the bowling of India’s Zaheer Khan and Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, both known for their exceptional yorkers and reverse swing abilities.

“If I am watching reverse swing, then I watch the videos of Zaheer Khan as well. Even Malinga’s interviews — he always said yorkers aren’t learned overnight. It takes years of repetition and hard work.”

He credited his father and coach for instilling in him the habit of practising with full effort, emphasizing that match performance mirrors the intensity of practice.

Numbers Speak for Arshdeep

Arshdeep Singh’s consistency has been reflected in his international statistics. The Punjab-born left-arm quick has represented India in 9 ODIs, taking 14 wickets with a best of 5/37.

However, his biggest impact has come in T20Is, where he recently etched his name into the record books during the Asia Cup 2025, becoming the first Indian bowler to claim 100 T20I wickets.

As of now, Arshdeep has 101 wickets in 65 matches at an economy rate of 8.37, with a best bowling figure of 4/9.

Mentorship and Brotherhood

What stands out most in Arshdeep’s journey is his respect for Jasprit Bumrah’s mentorship. The camaraderie between the two pacers has not only strengthened India’s bowling attack but also helped Arshdeep evolve into one of the most consistent performers in world cricket.

“Bumrah bhai has always told me — yorker marna hai toh baar baar practice karni padegi (if you want to bowl yorkers, you must practice them endlessly). I still try to follow that every single session,” Arshdeep shared.

With Bumrah as his guide and his own hunger to improve, Arshdeep Singh looks set to lead India’s pace revolution in the years to come.
