Adam Gilchrist Questions Dhoni’s Captaincy After CSK’s Narrow Loss to RCB

Following Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) heart-breaking two-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), legendary Australian cricketer and IPL-winning captain Adam Gilchrist has publicly questioned MS Dhoni’s tactics during the closing stages of the match. Speaking on Cricbuzz Live, Gilchrist pointed to key decision-making lapses that may have cost CSK the game.

Criticism Over Khaleel Ahmed’s 19th Over

Gilchrist was particularly baffled by the decision to bring Khaleel Ahmed back into the attack for the crucial 19th over. Having already conceded 32 runs in his first two overs, Khaleel was given the responsibility to bowl to big hitters Romario Shepherd and Tim David. The move backfired as RCB gained momentum in the death overs.

“Tactically, I don’t know if a huge difference could have been made [by giving the ball to someone other than Khaleel],” Gilchrist remarked. “Given where Noor finished, Jadeja with an extra over of spin is what he could have gone with. It’s such a mixed bag. They also bowled 45 dot balls.”

Alternative Options: Kamboj or Jadeja?

Gilchrist noted that MS Dhoni had alternative options at his disposal. He suggested young pacer Anshul Kamboj or even an extra over of spin from Ravindra Jadeja could have offered better control and reduced the margin for error.

Is Dhoni Losing His Tactical Edge?

Gilchrist didn’t stop at just criticizing the bowling changes. He raised concerns over whether Dhoni, who is nearing retirement, still possesses the sharp tactical acumen that made him one of the greatest cricketing minds.

“MS… he is never animated or shows any visible signs that he is upset. I just wonder if the energy is still being generated for him internally,” Gilchrist said.

“Whether the brain is still ticking for him as astutely as it always has, as he edges closer and closer to the end. Be it this year or next year, whatever it is. I don’t want to critique his leadership harshly because I feel he has been let down by some bad bowling.”

CSK’s Struggles Continue in IPL 2025

With this loss, CSK’s playoff hopes have taken a major hit. They now sit near the bottom of the table with just two wins from 11 games. Despite boasting some experienced campaigners, their inconsistent bowling and middle-order struggles have cost them dearly throughout the tournament.
