Sunil Gavaskar - Gautam Gambhir

“Dravid refused to accept more…,” Sunil Gavaskar questions Gautam Gambhir about Champions Trophy prize money

As India celebrates its Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has raised an intriguing question about head coach Gautam Gambhir’s share of the prize money. The BCCI recently announced a Rs 58 crore cash reward, with players and Gambhir each receiving Rs 3 crore, while assistant coaches and support staff were awarded Rs 50 lakh each.

Gavaskar Compares Gambhir with Rahul Dravid

In his latest column for Sportstar, Gavaskar recalled how Rahul Dravid, after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory, had chosen to split his prize money equally with his support staff instead of taking a higher sum. He questioned whether Gambhir would follow suit.

🔹 Gavaskar’s Statement:
“After the ICC T20 World Cup win and the Board announcement of prize money, the then-coach Rahul Dravid, ever the team man, refused to accept more than his fellow members of the coaching staff and, in fact, shared it equally with his colleagues.”

“It’s been a fortnight since the BCCI announced the Champions Trophy rewards, but we haven’t heard anything from the current coach on whether he will also do a Dravid. Or is it that Dravid, in this instance, is not a good role model?”

India’s Dominant Champions Trophy Campaign

Team India went unbeaten throughout the tournament, securing victories against Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand in the group stage. They then defeated Australia in the semi-final and New Zealand in the final to clinch the trophy.

Gavaskar also praised the BCCI for its generosity in rewarding the players and staff for their efforts.

“The BCCI, which is now awash with funds, is showing its appreciation for the efforts put in by everybody and rewarding them generously. The Board is also letting the players keep the prize money that the ICC announced for the winners, which is also a good amount each.”

While the debate on Gambhir’s stance continues, the Indian cricket fraternity remains focused on celebrating another historic triumph.
