IPL 2025: Indian Government Urges BCCI to Ban Alcohol and Tobacco Ads During Upcoming Season

In a significant move, the Indian government has formally requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to prohibit tobacco and alcohol advertisements from the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The decision comes amid growing concerns over India’s rising burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular issues, cancer, diabetes, and chronic lung diseases.

Government’s Plea to IPL Authorities

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sent a letter to IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal, urging the league to refrain from promoting tobacco and alcohol, whether directly or through surrogate marketing.

The letter, penned by Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, emphasizes that the IPL, being India’s most-watched sporting event, plays a crucial role in influencing public health messaging.

“India is experiencing a significant burden of noncommunicable diseases, accounting for over 70% of annual deaths. Tobacco and alcohol use are key risk factors, with India ranking second in tobacco-related deaths worldwide and nearly 14 lakh fatalities each year. IPL’s association with tobacco and alcohol promotions contradicts the message of health and fitness.”

Key Requests in the Letter

The government has proposed strict regulations to curb the influence of tobacco and alcohol on IPL audiences:

🔴 Ban all forms of tobacco/alcohol advertising, including surrogate ads, in stadiums, on live broadcasts, and any IPL-linked platforms.

🔴 Prohibit the sale of tobacco and alcohol in stadiums, affiliated events, and sports facilities.

🔴 Discourage cricketers, commentators, and sportspersons from endorsing these products, as they serve as role models for millions of young Indians.

“Cricket players inspire the youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle. As India’s largest sporting event, the IPL has a moral responsibility to support public health initiatives and the government’s healthcare efforts.”

How Will This Impact IPL 2025?

With the IPL 2025 season set to begin on March 22, featuring the opening clash between defending champions KKR and last year’s finalists SRH at Eden Gardens, this directive could significantly impact IPL sponsorships and advertising revenue. Several IPL teams and broadcasters have relied on surrogate marketing from alcohol and tobacco brands in past seasons.

The BCCI has yet to respond officially to the government’s request. If implemented, this ban would set a new precedent for ethical advertising in Indian sports, reinforcing the message of a healthier and more responsible society.
