The Bangladesh government has stepped in to address the growing controversy surrounding non-payment of players in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024-25 season. On Thursday, the country’s sports ministry announced the formation of a fact-finding three-member committee to investigate the issue, following rising concerns over the financial commitments of various franchises.

Committee Formed to Protect Players’ Interests
The National Sports Council (NSC) issued a press release stating that media reports regarding the delayed payments had caught their attention.
📢 NSC Statement:
“The country’s image, through the BCB and BPL, will be hurt if the payments are not made according to the contracts.”
The investigative committee consists of:
🔹 Humayun Kabir – NSC Director (Sports)
🔹 Sajia Afrin – NSC Assistant Director (Sports)
🔹 Saiful Islam – NSC Chairman’s Private Secretary
The committee has been given seven days to submit its report.
BPL Faces Backlash Over Payment Irregularities
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is under heavy scrutiny for reportedly not securing bank guarantees from all BPL teams before the tournament. As a result, multiple teams have allegedly failed to pay their players, leading to frustration among cricketers.
The biggest protest has come from the Durbar Rajshahi players:
❌ Local players boycotted a practice session in Chattogram.
❌ Overseas players refused to play against Rangpur Riders in Dhaka.
In response, the BCB has threatened legal action against the Rajshahi franchise for non-compliance with payment agreements.
Global Players’ Association Reacts
The controversy has drawn attention from the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA). Tom Moffat, the association’s chief executive, expressed deep disappointment over the situation, urging the BCB and franchises to honor their financial commitments.
The BPL, one of Bangladesh’s most high-profile T20 leagues, now faces a major credibility crisis. With the government stepping in, all eyes will be on the committee’s findings and how swiftly the BCB resolves the issue.
