Mohammed Shami Unlikely To Travel To Australia As NCA Yet To Offer Fitness Clearance

Indian pace spearhead Mohammed Shami is reportedly set to miss the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia as he has yet to receive fitness clearance from the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA). The veteran pacer, who is recovering from ankle and knee injuries, has been under constant evaluation by the BCCI’s Sports Science wing while representing Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024.

Injury Woes Continue for Shami

Shami’s fitness struggles over the last year have kept him out of action on several occasions. Following an ankle surgery earlier this year, he developed swelling in his knees, which prevented him from being considered for India’s squad for the marquee series against Australia.

Despite making a return to competitive cricket for Bengal in SMAT, where he has claimed eight wickets in seven matches, Shami’s participation in the Test series remains doubtful. BCCI officials have expressed concerns over his ability to handle the physical demands of a Test match.

BCCI’s Cautious Approach

As per reports from Cricbuzz, the Sports Science team, comprising selector SS Das, Sports Science head Nitin Patel, and strength and conditioning coach Nishanta Bardule, closely monitored Shami during a SMAT match in Rajkot. While impressed with his progress, the team remains hesitant to green-light his return for the high-intensity Border-Gavaskar series.

The pacer’s timeline for a potential return is now being speculated to align with the final Test of the series, scheduled in Sydney from January 3-7.

Shami Shines in SMAT Despite Setbacks

In the ongoing SMAT 2024, Shami has displayed glimpses of his brilliance, notably with a three-wicket haul against Rajasthan to secure Bengal’s spot in the knockout stages. However, the BCCI has opted for a cautious approach, prioritizing his long-term fitness over immediate availability.

India’s Bowling Concerns

Shami’s absence leaves a significant gap in India’s pace attack, particularly on Australian tracks. With the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj leading the charge, Shami’s availability could have added depth and experience to the squad.

For now, fans may have to wait a little longer to see the pacer back in action in the iconic Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
