The T20 Spring Challenge 2026 is the third edition of Cricket Australia’s women’s domestic T20 competition and will be played exclusively in Sydney from October 12 to October 21, 2026. The tournament features the eight Weber Women’s Big Bash League clubs alongside the ACT Meteors, giving emerging and established domestic players an additional opportunity to compete before WBBL|12.

The first-ranked team faces fourth, while second plays third, before the two winners meet in the October 21 final at Cricket Central.

Team Squads

The 2026 T20 Spring Challenge squads have not yet been officially published in a complete tournament-wide announcement.

Cricket Australia announced the competition schedule in July and stated that the tournament would feature the eight WBBL clubs and ACT Meteors. Individual team announcements have not established a complete set of confirmed Spring Challenge squads at the time of this guide.

Several clubs had previously indicated that their Spring Challenge squads would be confirmed closer to the tournament. Sydney Thunder, for example, explicitly stated that its squad would be announced in the coming months when its schedule was released.

Therefore, no probable squads or assumed player lists are included here.

Team Captains

Spring Challenge-specific captaincy has not been officially confirmed for all nine teams.

Because this is a development and preparation competition, leadership can differ from the teams’ regular WBBL captaincy. Confirmed match-day captains should therefore be checked when the individual squads and playing XIs are announced.

Tournament Format

The T20 Spring Challenge 2026 uses a simple league-and-finals structure.

League Stage

All nine teams are divided into one competition table rather than separate groups.

Each team plays four league matches, producing 18 regular-season matches in total.

The teams are ranked according to the official competition points system, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals.

Semi-finals

The semi-finals will be played at Cricket Central on October 20.

  • Semi-final 1: 1st place vs 4th place
  • Semi-final 2: 2nd place vs 3rd place

The higher-ranked teams therefore receive the direct advantage of facing lower-ranked opponents in the knockout stage.

Final

The two semi-final winners meet in the T20 Spring Challenge Final at Cricket Central on October 21.

The final will determine the 2026 champion.

Important Rules

The Spring Challenge is a domestic women’s T20 competition played under Cricket Australia’s applicable T20 playing conditions.

The tournament has 20-over matches, with the league stage determining the four finalists.

The 2026 competition will also operate under Cricket Australia’s revised T20 over-rate penalty framework. Cricket Australia confirmed that the new innings countdown rules introduced for the BBL and WBBL will also apply to the T20 Spring Challenge. When the countdown clock reaches zero, full Powerplay fielding restrictions apply from the next ball.

The competition also functions as a pathway event before WBBL|12, giving domestic players an opportunity to push for WBBL opportunities.

Previous Edition

The previous edition was played in October 2025, with the Hobart Hurricanes defeating the Brisbane Heat in the final at Cricket Central in Sydney.

Hobart produced 193/4 from 20 overs, the highest team total of the 2025 tournament, before bowling Brisbane out for 105 in 19 overs.

The Hurricanes therefore won the final by 88 runs and successfully defended the trophy they had won in the inaugural 2024 edition.

Captain Elyse Villani was the standout performer in the final, scoring 61 from 29 balls. Callie Wilson took 3/15 as the Hurricanes’ bowling attack completed the victory.

Defending Champions

Hobart Hurricanes

Hobart Hurricanes are the two-time defending champions of the T20 Spring Challenge.

They won the inaugural 2024 tournament by defeating Brisbane Heat by five wickets in a final-ball finish at Cricket Central. Emma Manix-Geeves scored the winning run from the last ball, while Lizelle Lee made 63 from 47 balls.

The Hurricanes then defeated Brisbane again in the 2025 final, winning by 88 runs.

Hobart will therefore attempt to complete a hat-trick of Spring Challenge titles in 2026.

Previous Season Runner-Up

Brisbane Heat were the runners-up in the 2025 T20 Spring Challenge.

It was their second consecutive appearance in the final. The Heat had also lost the inaugural 2024 final to Hobart Hurricanes.

In the 2025 decider, Brisbane were restricted to 105 after Hobart posted 193/4.

The 2026 schedule gives Brisbane four league matches before the knockout stage, including fixtures against Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, ACT Meteors and Adelaide Strikers.

Key Matches

Hobart Hurricanes vs ACT Meteors — October 12

The tournament begins with the defending champions facing ACT Meteors at Blacktown International Sports Park No. 2.

It is the first opportunity to see whether Hobart can begin its title defence with a positive result.

Sydney Sixers vs Brisbane Heat — October 12

The second match of the tournament brings together two established WBBL clubs. The fixture is particularly relevant because Brisbane were last season’s runners-up.

Sydney Thunder vs Brisbane Heat — October 13

The teams meet in an evening fixture at Bankstown Oval, one of three scheduled night matches during the league stage.

Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes — October 14

This is another defending-champion fixture, with Hobart facing Adelaide at Bankstown Oval.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Perth Scorchers — October 17

The defending champions meet Perth during the penultimate phase of the league stage.

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars — October 18

The final league match involving the defending teams is scheduled as an evening game and closes the 18-match regular season.

Semi-finals and Final

The October 20 semi-finals and October 21 final at Cricket Central will decide the 2026 champion.

Records and History

The T20 Spring Challenge was introduced in 2024 and has completed only two editions before the 2026 season.

Hobart Hurricanes have won both previous tournaments:

YearWinnerRunner-upResult
2024Hobart HurricanesBrisbane HeatHobart won by 5 wickets
2025Hobart HurricanesBrisbane HeatHobart won by 88 runs

Both finals were played at Cricket Central in Sydney.

Hobart are therefore the only team to have won the competition, while Brisbane Heat are the only team to have appeared in both finals alongside the Hurricanes.

2025 Tournament Records

Adelaide Strikers batter Maddie Penna was the leading run-scorer of the 2025 tournament with 229 runs from four matches. She was also named joint Player of the Tournament with Sydney Sixers all-rounder Maitlan Brown.

Brown took seven wickets and contributed 73 runs during the 2025 competition, while Hobart’s Nicola Carey scored 157 runs.

Hobart’s 193/4 in the 2025 final remains the highest total recorded in that edition.

What to Expect

The 2026 T20 Spring Challenge continues to serve as a bridge between Australia’s domestic 50-over season and the Weber WBBL. All eight WBBL clubs and ACT Meteors will receive four matches, creating opportunities for developing players and domestic cricketers to press their case before the main WBBL season.

Hobart Hurricanes enter with the strongest historical record after winning both previous editions. Their back-to-back victories over Brisbane Heat mean the two-time champions will be the central reference point when the third tournament begins.

The schedule also places a strong emphasis on Sydney’s growing domestic cricket infrastructure. Most league matches are staged at Blacktown International Sports Park and Bankstown Oval, while Cricket Central hosts both semi-finals and the final.

The top-four format means the league stage remains important despite each team playing only four matches. A strong net run rate and consistent results could be decisive in determining which four teams reach the October 20 semi-finals.
