Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed on Friday, September 19, that young left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage will rejoin the national squad in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the remainder of the Asia Cup 2025, following the tragic passing of his father.

In an official statement, SLC said:
“Wellalage, who returned home to pay his last respects to his late father, will rejoin the team tomorrow morning. He will travel to the UAE tonight, accompanied by Team Manager Mahinda Halangode.”

Return in Time for Bangladesh Clash

Sri Lanka is scheduled to face Bangladesh on September 20 in a crucial Super Four encounter, followed by high-voltage games against Pakistan (September 23) and India (September 26). Wellalage will be available for selection from the Bangladesh game onward, providing a much-needed spin option to skipper Wanindu Hasaranga.

Tragic News After Afghanistan Game

The 22-year-old all-rounder received the heartbreaking news of his father’s passing shortly after Sri Lanka’s six-wicket victory against Afghanistan on Thursday, September 18. In a widely circulated video on social media, head coach Sanath Jayasuriya was seen breaking the news to a visibly emotional Wellalage in the dressing room.

Tough Outing vs Afghanistan

Wellalage endured a difficult outing in that match, conceding 49 runs in four overs and picking just one wicket. He was taken apart by veteran Afghan batter Mohammad Nabi, who smashed him for five sixes in a single over en route to a blistering 22-ball 60. Despite that onslaught, Sri Lanka successfully chased 170 to secure their place in the Super Four stage.

With his return, Sri Lanka will hope the youngster can overcome the personal tragedy and make a strong impact in the decisive stages of the Asia Cup 2025.
