Phil Simmons to continue as Bangladesh’s head coach until 2027 ODI World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that Phil Simmons will remain the head coach of the Bangladesh men’s national team until the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. Initially appointed in October 2024 on a short-term contract set to expire after the 2025 Champions Trophy, Simmons has now been given a long-term extension.

Simmons Earns Long-Term Contract Despite Champions Trophy Struggles

Simmons was brought in as Bangladesh’s head coach after the suspension of Chandika Hathurusingha. His initial tenure included series against South Africa, Afghanistan, and the West Indies, followed by the 2025 Champions Trophy.

While Bangladesh endured a group-stage exit in the Champions Trophy—losing to India and New Zealand—the BCB was impressed with his approach and team management, leading to the contract extension.

Phil Simmons’ Statement on Contract Extension

🗣️ Simmons on Continuing as Bangladesh Head Coach:
“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis. The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together.”

“Having worked with some exceptional players already, I can see the immense promise in this squad. Their skill and passion for the game inspire me daily. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and create something truly special.”

BCB’s Faith in Simmons’ Vision

While Bangladesh’s recent performances have been inconsistent, including a Test and T20I series win against the West Indies, the BCB believes Simmons can build a competitive unit in global events with more time.

🗣️ Simmons on the Team’s Potential:
“My time with the Bangladesh team over the past few months has been incredibly rewarding. The energy, commitment, and ability within this group have been nothing short of impressive. I’m excited to continue helping these players reach their full potential.”
