PSL vs IPL

PSL to Expand with Two New Teams in 2026, Aims to Rival IPL

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set for a major expansion, with two new teams expected to join the tournament from 2026. Currently a six-team league, the PSL has been growing in stature every year, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now looking to make it even bigger.

The move is seen as a significant step for Pakistan cricket, as the PCB continues to strengthen the league and challenge the dominance of other top franchise tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL).

PSL to Add Two More Teams from 2026

The confirmation of the league’s expansion came from PSL CEO Salman Naseer, who revealed that discussions are already in progress to introduce two new teams by the end of this year.

“By the end of this year, we might get two more teams. We started at a time when no cricket was happening in Pakistan. The challenge was to bring it back,” Naseer told Reuters.

Cricket to Expand Beyond Major Cities

Apart from expanding the number of teams, the PSL also aims to bring cricket to non-traditional cities outside major hubs like Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Multan.

“Now that we’ve successfully brought cricket back to traditional centers, the next step is expanding beyond these four cities,” added Naseer.

This suggests that new teams could be based in emerging cricketing regions such as Faisalabad, Sialkot, Quetta, or Hyderabad, further strengthening Pakistan’s cricket ecosystem.

PSL 2026: A Bigger Tournament, Bigger Challenges

While the expansion is exciting news, logistical challenges come with it. With more teams, PSL will require a bigger window, which could lead to a scheduling clash with the IPL—the world’s most lucrative T20 league.

“This year will be an interesting test, and with more teams, we anticipate a bigger window. Some of our rights are up for valuation after this PSL. A lot will depend on the data we gather,” Naseer noted.

A direct clash with IPL could hurt PSL’s viewership and player availability, as many international cricketers prioritize the IPL due to its high salaries and global appeal.

When Will PSL 2025 Start?

The PSL 2025 season is set to kick off on April 11, with defending champions Islamabad United taking on Lahore Qalandars in the opening game at Rawalpindi.

  • Islamabad United remains the most successful PSL team with three titles.
  • Multan Sultans have been finalists for three consecutive seasons but have only won once (2021).
