Axar Patel: A Long-Serving DC Star Steps Up
Having been a part of Delhi Capitals since 2019, Axar has been one of the team’s most consistent performers with both bat and ball. Across 82 matches for the franchise, he has scored 967 runs and picked up 62 wickets at an impressive economy of 7.09. Known for his calm demeanor and all-round abilities, he has now been entrusted with the captaincy after serving as the vice-captain for two seasons.

Welcoming Axar’s promotion, Delhi Capitals Chairman Kiran Kumar Grandhi expressed confidence in his leadership:
“We are delighted to appoint Axar as the Delhi Capitals captain. He has been an integral part of the Capitals family since 2019 and embodies the values that this team is built on. This decision reflects his natural progression as a leader.”
DC Co-owner Parth Jindal, who was instrumental in bringing Axar to the team, also praised his evolution:
“Having personally picked Axar in 2019, my relationship with him goes beyond cricket. Over the last two years as vice-captain, he has become a much-loved character in the dressing room. With experienced leaders like KL Rahul, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc in our squad, I believe this is the start of something special for Delhi Capitals.”

Expressing gratitude for his new role, Axar Patel stated:
“It is my absolute honor to captain Delhi Capitals. I’ve grown as a cricketer and as a person here, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side forward. We have plenty of leaders in the group, which will be helpful for me, and I can’t wait to join the team and make this season a successful one.”
Axar’s DC vs. Pant’s LSG in IPL 2025 Opener
Axar will have his first big test as captain when Delhi Capitals take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), led by Rishabh Pant, in their season opener on March 24, 2025, in Visakhapatnam.
With 150 IPL matches under his belt, Axar Patel has already proved his worth as an all-rounder, including a stunning hat-trick in 2016. Now, he steps into a leadership role, working closely with Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, Mentor Kevin Pietersen, Head Coach Hemang Badani, Assistant Coach Matthew Mott, and Bowling Coach Munaf Patel.
