“Wanted to Bounce Back After a Tough Australia Tour” – Kohli Reflects on India’s Champions Trophy 2025 Victory

India’s emphatic Champions Trophy 2025 triumph against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 9 marked a defining moment for the team, as they claimed their third title in the tournament’s history. Following the thrilling final, members of the victorious squad shared their emotions, experiences, and reflections on what this win meant to them.

Virat Kohli: “We Wanted to Bounce Back”

Speaking after the triumph, Virat Kohli emphasized how this tournament was an opportunity for India to bounce back after a challenging tour of Australia earlier in the year.

“We wanted to bounce back after a tough Australia tour, wanted to win a big tournament, and we ended up doing that. So, it’s an amazing feeling. Playing with such an incredible bunch of youngsters has been a joy; there’s so much talent in the dressing room. They are taking Indian cricket forward in the right direction, and we are happy to share our experiences and help them grow.”

Kohli highlighted that India’s success was a collective effort, where every player contributed at different stages.

“Winning a title isn’t about just one or two performances—it’s about the entire squad stepping up. Across five matches, different players put their hands up at crucial moments, and that’s why we won. Impactful knocks, match-winning spells—it was a true team effort.”

He also spoke about his role in mentoring the younger players like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Hardik Pandya, ensuring that the next generation was ready to take on the world.

“When you leave, you want to leave the team in a better position. And that’s what we are striving for—ensuring that this squad is prepared for the next 8-10 years. These guys have the talent and awareness to succeed at the highest level.”

Kohli also praised New Zealand, calling them one of the most consistent teams in world cricket, and expressed his admiration for their ability to execute plans with precision.

“New Zealand always maximizes their talent and executes plans better than anyone else. They are the best fielding side in the world and one of the most disciplined teams. Huge respect for them.”

KL Rahul: “I Was S****ing Myself at the End”

India’s wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, who played a crucial role in the final moments of the chase, admitted he felt the pressure but trusted his ability to finish games.

“I don’t think I can say this on camera, but I was s**ing myself at the end! But we still had a couple of batters to come, so I was confident we could get over the line. In big games, it’s all about composure.”

Rahul credited India’s domestic system for grooming players to handle high-pressure situations.

“We’ve grown up facing pressure since the time we picked up a bat. Indian cricket teaches you to thrive under challenges, and the BCCI has given us the right platform to develop our skills.”

Shubman Gill: “Rohit Bhai Kept Me Going”

India’s young opener Shubman Gill, who partnered Rohit Sharma for a century stand in the final, described the experience as surreal.

“For most of the innings, I was just enjoying Rohit Bhai’s batting! He kept talking to me, telling me to focus on the scoreboard and stay till the end. His guidance was crucial.”

Gill reflected on the heartbreak of India’s 2023 ODI World Cup loss and how winning the Champions Trophy was a special moment.

“We missed out in 2023, so lifting this trophy means everything. Watching Virat bhai on TV as a kid and now playing alongside him—it’s incredible. His intensity is unmatched.”

Hardik Pandya: “Proud to Win After 2017 Heartbreak”

All-rounder Hardik Pandya played a crucial finishing role and reflected on the 2017 Champions Trophy final loss to Pakistan.

“I remember 2017 vividly—we couldn’t finish the job back then. So, to be standing here with the trophy now feels incredible.”

He also praised KL Rahul for his composure in the chase.

“KL was calm, composed, and played his shots at the right time. That’s the kind of player he is—so much talent, and he showed it today.”

Shreyas Iyer: “I Thrive Under Pressure”

Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who played a key role in stabilizing India’s innings, said he relishes pressure situations.

“I love challenges—I feel I thrive under pressure. I was getting starts throughout the tournament but couldn’t convert them into big scores. But as long as I contribute to the team’s success, I’m happy.”

He described winning his first ICC trophy as an overwhelming experience.

“It’s hard to put into words. Seeing the dressing room so happy, the way we played as a team—it’s just magnificent.”

Ravindra Jadeja: “Either a Hero or a Zero”

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who played a crucial finishing role, admitted that batting in his position can be unpredictable.

“My batting position means I’m either a hero or a zero. Today, KL and Hardik did the job, and that was a game-changing moment.”

Having now won two ICC trophies in a year (2024 T20 World Cup & 2025 Champions Trophy), Jadeja acknowledged how special these victories are.

“Playing for India in these big tournaments is always an honor. You regret the missed opportunities, but I’m lucky to be part of winning teams now.”

Kuldeep Yadav: “Rohit Bhai’s Captaincy Was Outstanding”

Spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was instrumental in the tournament, praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership in managing India’s four-pronged spin attack.

“People talk about playing four spinners, but managing them is another challenge. Rohit bhai was outstanding—he planned everything days in advance.”

Kuldeep, who didn’t have to bat in the final, joked about celebrating India’s win.

“Luckily, I didn’t have to bat today! Now, we’ll celebrate—and the entire nation will celebrate with us!”

India’s Triumph: A Fitting Reward for Teamwork

With this victory, India lifted their third ICC Champions Trophy title, adding to their wins in 2002 (shared with Sri Lanka) and 2013.

🏆 Champions Trophy Titles:
2002 – Joint winners with Sri Lanka
2013 – Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy
2025 – Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership

The players’ post-match reflections highlighted the camaraderie, belief, and preparation that drove India to success. With a blend of experienced leaders and rising stars, this win marks the beginning of a new golden era for Indian cricket.
