Mohammed Shami on ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Return: “If God’s Willing, Everything Is Possible”

The journey back to cricket has been anything but easy for veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami. Reflecting on his challenging comeback, Shami shared the struggles he faced, from needing assistance to climb stairs at the National Cricket Academy to reclaiming his spot on the national team.

World Cup Comeback Hero

Shami initially warmed the bench during the ODI World Cup 2023, but his fortunes changed following Hardik Pandya’s injury against Bangladesh. Once given the chance, Shami made an immediate impact, emerging as a key bowler for India. He ended the tournament as the highest wicket-taker, claiming 24 wickets in just seven matches, including a stunning seven-wicket haul against New Zealand in the semifinals.

Recovery and Domestic Cricket Return

A persistent right heel injury led to surgery on his Achilles tendon, sidelining Shami for months. Determined to return, the 34-year-old made his comeback in the Ranji Trophy, taking seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh. He then participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), where he picked up 11 wickets, and continued his form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, securing five wickets in three matches.

Eyeing Champions Trophy 2025

With the upcoming white-ball series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on the horizon, Shami’s potential return to the Indian squad is a topic of much anticipation.

“Everything is possible if the superior (God) wants,” Shami told Anandabazar Patrika when asked about his possible comeback.

The Emotional Toll of Being Away from Cricket

Shami spoke candidly about the emotional challenges of being away from the game.

“To a player, the game is everything. Without it, who would enjoy life? Life is life for me. How can I be happy if I can’t pick up the ball? Life has become very difficult, that much I can say,” he added.

As Shami eyes a return to the international stage, his perseverance and determination continue to inspire fans and teammates alike, symbolizing resilience in the face of adversity.
