Yashasvi Jaiswal Fielder - India

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Tough Day in the Field: Three Drops, Rohit Sharma Loses Cool

Day 4 of the fourth Test between India and Australia at Melbourne turned out to be a challenging outing for young Yashasvi Jaiswal. The Indian fielding unit, otherwise sharp, faced a setback as Jaiswal dropped three catches, earning sharp reactions from captain Rohit Sharma and mixed opinions from commentators.

India, led by fiery spells from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, looked to seize control after trailing by 105 runs in the first innings. However, Jaiswal’s lapses in the field proved costly and added to the pressure.

The Three-Dropped Chances

  1. The First Drop (3rd Over, Jasprit Bumrah’s Bowling)
Positioned at leg gully, Jaiswal missed a difficult opportunity off Usman Khawaja’s bat. While commentators acknowledged it was a tough chance, the miss set the tone for a frustrating fielding day for the youngster.
  2. The Second Drop (Akash Deep’s Bowling)
This was perhaps the easiest chance of the three. Marnus Labuschagne nicked one to slips, where Jaiswal was stationed. Unfortunately, he failed to hold on, prompting Rohit Sharma to throw his hands in the air in visible frustration.
  3. The Third Drop (Last Over Before Lunch, Ravindra Jadeja’s Bowling)
Fielding at silly point, Jaiswal missed another opportunity when Pat Cummins defended a ball that went straight to him. Failing to stay low enough, the young fielder let the ball slip through, leading to another visibly disappointed reaction from Rohit, who placed his hands on his head.

Rohit Sharma’s Reaction Sparks Debate

Rohit’s reactions to the missed chances, especially the second and third, did not sit well with commentators. One commentator remarked (via Hindustan Times):

“Not the right body language from the captain. You are the one to have to send the message of calm and support. No one means to drop a catch. He is going to feel bad enough for putting the catch down…but you don’t need to see that as a young player.”

The Bigger Picture

While Jaiswal’s dropped catches proved costly, the young cricketer remains a promising talent with a bright future. Fielding errors, especially under high-pressure situations, are a part of the learning curve.

Rohit’s visible frustration might stem from the high stakes of the match, but the team will need to rally around Jaiswal to ensure he bounces back stronger.

With India’s bowlers continuing to deliver, all eyes will be on how the team responds and whether Jaiswal can redeem himself if another chance comes his way.
