Sachin-Tendulkar

Why Was Sachin Tendulkar’s India Debut Not Televised by Doordarshan?

November 15, 1989, holds a special place in cricket history as the day Sachin Tendulkar, the ‘God of Cricket,’ made his international debut. While Tendulkar went on to become the highest run-scorer in international cricket and a global icon, his debut match against Pakistan remains an intriguing piece of trivia—not because of his performance but because it wasn’t televised.

Lok Sabha Elections Took Precedence Over Tendulkar’s Debut

At the time, Doordarshan was the sole broadcaster of India’s cricket matches. However, the preparations for the 9th Lok Sabha elections overshadowed sports, leading Doordarshan to prioritize political coverage over the first two Tests of the India-Pakistan series.

The elections were scheduled for November 22 and 26, 1989, coinciding with the Test series. The first Test began on November 15 in Karachi, while the second commenced on November 23. Consequently, cricket fans were unable to witness live coverage of Tendulkar’s historic debut.

Tendulkar’s Performance in His Debut Match

  • Match Summary: India was touring Pakistan for a four-match Test series, all of which ended in draws.
  • Sachin’s Contribution:
    • Batting: Tendulkar scored 15 runs in the first innings and did not bat in the second.
    • Bowling: He bowled five overs but remained wicketless.
  • Despite the modest debut, Tendulkar’s talent was evident, and he would go on to rewrite cricketing history over the next 24 years.

A Missed Opportunity for Fans

While Tendulkar’s farewell Test in 2013 saw thousands packing the Wankhede Stadium and millions tuning in globally, the absence of live coverage during his debut left fans relying on match reports and highlights.

Although his first innings didn’t set the cricketing world alight, it marked the beginning of an unparalleled journey, as Tendulkar rose to become the symbol of Indian cricket and a global sporting legend.

The lack of a live broadcast of his debut only adds to the mystique of the boy who would go on to become cricket’s brightest star.
