PSL 2025: Limited Budget Hampers Franchise Efforts to Sign Unsold IPL Stars

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 is grappling with a significant challenge: the salary cap of USD 200,000 for players, which is preventing franchises from signing high-profile overseas cricketers who recently went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

The upcoming PSL season, scheduled from April 8 to May 19, will directly clash with IPL 2025, and the franchises are eager to bolster their rosters with marquee players to attract global attention. Among the big names currently available are David Warner, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Jonny Bairstow, and Adil Rashid, who will be free of international commitments during this period.

Salary Cap Constraints

Despite the excitement among the six franchise owners to secure top-tier talent, the USD 200,000 salary cap for the PSL player draft has posed a significant obstacle.

“The problem is that time is running out to find a formula to sign high-profile players and also ensure a sense of disparity doesn’t develop among players in the PSL,” a source told PTI.

It is understood that most unsold IPL players are unlikely to accept contracts below the PSL’s maximum wage, making negotiations complicated.

Direct Negotiations Suggested

The PCB’s new CEO, Salman Naseer, has proposed a potential workaround, suggesting that franchise owners directly negotiate with players’ agents to bypass the limitations of the draft system.

“The PCB wants to stay out of negotiations, leaving it to the franchises to approach players’ agents,” the source added.

However, this approach has faced resistance, with some franchises opposing the idea of bypassing the draft altogether.

“Some franchises insist that all major players should be part of the draft to ensure transparency and fairness,” the source explained.

Concerns Over Player Disparity

Franchise owners are also wary of creating dissatisfaction among other players, especially local talent, if marquee players are offered salaries exceeding the existing wage cap.

“If a team signs a well-known player at a higher salary, it might upset the balance and lead to dissatisfaction among other players,” a franchise representative stated.

Interest from Player Agents

Despite the challenges, agents of several unsold IPL players have reportedly reached out to PSL franchises to explore potential deals. This interest indicates that there is still hope for PSL teams to sign high-profile players if the salary cap issue can be resolved.

PSL 2025 Draft Looms

The PSL 2025 draft, set for January 11, will be a critical moment for franchises to finalize their squads. However, with time running out and no clear solution to the salary cap issue, it remains to be seen whether the league can secure the star power it needs to compete with the IPL in terms of viewership and global appeal.

As the PCB and franchise owners navigate this tricky situation, the stakes are higher than ever for PSL 2025 to make a lasting impression on the cricketing world.
