The Mission Road Ground opened its gates in 1976, marking the beginning of a remarkable sporting legacy. Its inaugural match was a thrilling encounter between a Hong Kong XI and the Queensland Colts, setting the stage for years of exciting cricketing action to come.
International Recognition
In November 2015, the International Cricket Council (ICC) bestowed a remarkable honor upon the Mission Road Ground by approving it as a venue for hosting One Day International (ODI) matches. This prestigious recognition elevated the ground’s status, making it the first international cricket venue not only in Hong Kong but in all of East Asia and China.
A Historic ODI Debut
The ground’s moment of glory arrived on 26th January 2016 when it hosted its maiden One Day International. The Hong Kong cricket team squared off against Scotland in a match that marked a significant milestone in the ground’s history. It was part of the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship, and the atmosphere was electric as fans witnessed international cricketing action on this hallowed turf. A second ODI was scheduled but unfortunately succumbed to unfavorable weather conditions.
Twenty20 Thrills
Following the ODI, Mission Road Ground continued to make history by hosting the first two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) at the venue. Once again, it was the clash between Hong Kong and Scotland that left fans on the edge of their seats. These T20Is showcased the dynamic and fast-paced nature of modern cricket, and the ground proved to be a worthy stage for such thrilling encounters.
Challenges Amidst Triumphs
While Mission Road Ground has seen many highs, it has also faced its share of challenges. In February 2020, the Interport Series was scheduled to take place at this iconic venue. However, the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the event. Nevertheless, the cricketing spirit persevered, and the series found a new home at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur.
